- Mandelbrot at Cincinnati: The author travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to attend a 5-day conference on Fractals and Chaos. Mandelbrot gives most of the lectures, but there are other speakers as well, notably Yorke and Pietgen.Part of the documentation is given over to the application of fractal concepts to the description of Cincinnati's human and urban landscape.
- The Revelation of Dr.I.Y.Snew: In 1980 the college town of Lamely, South Carolina was honored by the presence of Dr. Ignatius Y. Snew in residence at Mushposh University.After surmounting numerous hurdles the narrator, an incorrigible college drop-out, was allowed an interview with the Great Man, whose quite original ideas on the Two-Cultures Dilemma bore an amazing resemblance to those of the physicist/novelist C.P. Snow.
